I ran across this website a couple weeks ago while figuring out what to do for my creative response because I was going to cook something. Some of these recipes look really good so I might have to make a few of them. Thought you guys might like some of them and also want to try making them.

I had an awesome time this quarter taking this class. I enjoyed learning about Native Americans and listening to the stories kohl and Paco told in class. To be honest, if it wasn’t for this class I probably would have never took the time to learn about Native Americans and the challenges they face every day. I also learned a lot about different writing styles and how to write better research papers because in the past I had a hard time writing them. By the end of the quarter I was glad that I took this class and it was one of my favorite classes I took this quarter. Thanks again.

Research Paper Finally Done!!

I finally finished my research paper over the weekend and it feels good to have it done, and I’m sure everyone else feels the same way. I’m glad that I had the outline to go off of because without it I would have been lost. It’s also helpful to have all or most of the research part done before trying to start it.  It seems like every time I write a paper I have trouble writing the outline and intro paragraph. I also say that I am going to start my papers early but I never do, I always procrastinate a lot when I have to write papers so last weekend is when I got most of it done.  Anyways, thought I would write something today.

                I’m glad that they got to come back and talk to us again. It is always interesting to hear all the stories they have about things that our going on in their tribe and in Pine Ridge and also in the Native American communities. I liked when they talked about the world ending stuff, it was cool to hear what they think about it. Thanks again guys for making the trip and talking to us.

What we did this week.

Not sure really what to write about this week so ill just talk about what we did in class. On Monday we watched a movie that was about the boarding schools that the Native Americans were forced to go to. Some of the people told stories about their experiences while staying there and all the horrible things they encountered. Some of the things like cutting their hair and making them wear “American” clothes. They also talked about how they were abused physically and sexually. I couldn’t imagine how bad it really was back then and you don’t really understand it in till you hear from people that experienced it. It was a powerful movie that got the point out and it must have been hard for the people that told their stories.

                On Tuesday we talked about what we were going to do for our creative response and worked on our outlines again. I’m still not one hundred percent sure what I’m going to be doing for the project so I have a lot of thinking to do over the weekend. I’m going to do something with art or food.

Movie from Monday's class

The movie we watched on Monday was full of information. I forgot the name of it, so if anyone remembers it could you let me know?  It was pretty sad to see how the people were living on the reservation and how the government wouldn’t fix the things that were broken in their houses or help to take care of the black mold that can cause health problems or the bug problems. You never really know how bad it can get until you see and hear from people that experience it every day. It seemed that the government didn’t really care about them and put them on the bottom of the list of people to help. I think that is wrong and we should be helping them before we start helping other countries.

Today in class

It was an interesting experience when we went to the UW drama classroom today during class. Wasn’t sure what we were doing there or what it was about but the first half was pretty weird.  Although I didn’t get to stay the whole time can anyone fill me in on what you guys did the rest of the class?

Creative Response

Hi Everyone,

I am having some trouble coming up with ideas for the creative response project. I would like to hear what other people are doing or if they have any ideas that would be fun to do. Does anyone know if cooking some traditional Native American food would work for this project? Thanks.

Just wanted to thank Kohl and Paco for taking the time out of their busy day to give us an awesome presentation. It was very informational and entertaining to listen to them.  It must have been hard to stay up there for two hours and keep everyone interested (but you guys nailed it). It was one of the best presentations I have seen while being at Cascadia. Thanks again and I hope you guys can come down and talk to our class again sometime.  

Books to read

If you guys liked the book we read in class from Sherman Alexie, I would recommend this other book from him “the lone ranger and tonto fistfight in heave”. It is a funny book to read and I think you’ll enjoy it.

Indian Education Response paper

Indian Education Response

                In this reading, the focus was about Indian schooling from a boy named Junior who grew up on an Indian reservation. It consisted of many short stories of his experiences going from first to twelfth grade. And what he had to overcome while going to a white person school. Even though this is about one kid, it gives the sense of how it really was for Native American children growing up in a place full of white people. He first started going to school on the reservation and then went to a school off the reservation when he realized he wanted a higher education. He later returned to the reservation after he graduated.

            Junior graduated as a valedictorian at a farm town high school in eastern Washington. When he went back to the reservation he noticed that the same people he grew up with and graduated the same year with still couldn’t read and got diplomas anyways. Some of them even got diplomas just for showing up to class every day. Even the people that did well didn’t know what to do after graduation and were scared at what the future will bring. This tells me that most people back then didn’t want a higher education and just wanted to party and have a good time. Back then, Native Americans could only get jobs on the reservation, so they knew that they wouldn’t have to go to college or get more education in order to find work.

            Junior was a very smart boy and knew he loved math and school in general from a young age. So he decided to go to a school off the reservation where he knew that he would be able to learn all he wanted. He played basketball for his high school team nicknamed the “Indians” and was extremely good.
